I did a double take when I came across this article that the hairstyles of the Japanese women track the ups and downs of the economy. But this is a fact that no economist can ever explain. And if you are an economist forecaster then beware 'coz the Japanese women are beginning to cut their hair and wear it shorter.
Over the past
two decades, Kao, Japan's second-largest cosmetics firm, went to the streets of Tokyo and Osaka and conducted regular
surveys of 1,000 women. And the results have been astonishing as well as eerily or funnily accurate.
Historically in Japan, women tended to wear longer hair
until the bursting of the economic bubble in the early 1990s. And when the boom turned to bust, the streets of Tokyo took a drastic turn as far as the length of the hair went.
Beginning
around 2002, longer hairstyles became common once again, coinciding
with a mild economic recovery. And with the current economic crisis gathering more and more momentum, shorter styles are making a noticeable comeback.
Well, the things they dont teach you at Harvard Business School. ;-)
